Green tea has become increasingly popular among the younger generation, and for good reason — it offers a wide range of health benefits. Drinking green tea regularly can support wellness, energy, and overall vitality. But to enjoy all its benefits, it’s important to brew it correctly. Unlike black tea, green tea has a milder flavor. Even if it tastes slightly bitter, it’s nothing like the strong, bold taste of black tea. Follow these steps to brew a perfect cup: 1. Measure the Tea Leaves For a standard cup of green tea, use 1 teaspoon (2–2.5 grams) of tea leaves. Adjust slightly if you prefer a stronger or lighter taste. 2. Heat the Water The ideal water temperature for green tea is 75–80°C. • Bring water to a gentle boil and then let it cool for 5–7 minutes to reach the right temperature. • Avoid using boiling water directly, as it can make green tea taste bitter. 3. Steep the Tea • Add 2–2.5 grams of green tea leaves to a cup (about 200–220 ml). • Pour the warm water over the leaves. • Cover and let it steep for 2–3 minutes. Tip: Avoid steeping for too long to preserve the delicate flavor and aroma. 4. Serve and Enjoy • Pour the brewed tea into a cup pre-warmed with hot water. • Enjoy it without sugar to fully experience the natural taste, aroma, and health benefits. Why Quality Matters To truly enjoy green tea, always use high-quality leaves. At Kioly Ceylon, our Green Tea is carefully selected to ensure freshness, flavor, and maximum health benefits. If you want to enjoy a perfect cup of green tea at home, try Kioly Ceylon Green Tea — your taste buds and body will thank you.
Take a few minutes to read this article — you might be surprised to realize what we’ve been drinking all this time. Just like in many other countries, in Sri Lanka too, tea is not just a beverage — it’s part of our culture, our family conversations, and our daily lifestyle. But there’s something more we need to think about — the spoonful of sugar we add to our tea. Many people don’t fully realize how silently that sugar reduces the natural goodness of tea. So let’s talk about why we should pay more attention to this and understand it better. For most of us, sweetness means comfort — something that pleases the tongue and the mind. Many have gotten used to adding sugar to tea to soften its natural bitterness. Generally, a majority drink at least two cups of tea a day, sometimes even up to five or six. Now imagine this — if someone adds two teaspoons of sugar per cup and drinks four cups a day, that’s already 25–30 grams of sugar just from tea! We already know the harmful effects of sugar — it contributes to diabetes, heart diseases, obesity, laziness, tooth decay, and many other health problems. This isn’t limited to tea — any food high in sugar brings the same risks. But here’s something many of us don’t know — if you drink black tea without sugar, you’re not only reducing your sugar intake but also allowing your body to benefit from tea’s hidden protectors — natural compounds that help defend you from diseases. Ceylon tea, grown in our own soil, naturally contains antioxidants — powerful compounds like tea flavonoids, catechins, and theaflavins — that actively fight against illnesses in your body. These antioxidants are the warriors that bring the true strength of tea into your system. Research shows that these flavonoids can even help reduce the risk of diabetes. But when you add sugar, it interferes with the absorption of these antioxidants into your body. Without proper absorption, their health benefits are lost — they simply pass through your system and leave without doing their job. Isn’t it a pity? We drink something so beneficial every day, yet we unknowingly block its goodness. Moreover, sugar hides the real flavor, freshness, and aroma of pure tea. So, at the end of the day, we drink a cup of tea full of potential — but gain almost nothing from it. Today, many children are already showing pre-diabetic conditions, which is becoming a serious concern. That’s why it’s so important to get them used to drinking plain tea without sugar from a young age. For young adults too, drinking unsweetened tea should become a healthy social trend. If it’s hard to switch suddenly, start by gradually reducing the sugar you add, or try brewing your tea a little lighter. After all, we already drink green tea without sugar — and both black and green tea come from the same plant, only processed differently. Their chemical composition varies due to how they’re made, but both carry incredible health benefits. Also, get used to drinking high-quality tea. Sri Lanka produces teas with diverse strength, color, and aroma — find one that’s naturally flavorful and fragrant. When you experience that pure taste, you’ll start enjoying your tea without sugar. Tea is more than just a beverage — it’s a source of health, comfort, and happiness. Brewing the perfect cup is both an art and a science, and even small mistakes in the process can prevent you from enjoying its full flavor and benefits. In this article, we’ll guide you step by step on how to brew the perfect black tea 1. Choosing the Right Tea Leaves The first step to a great cup is high-quality, fresh tea leaves. Avoid old or stale leaves, as no matter how carefully you brew, they won’t deliver the aroma or flavor you’re looking for. For a single cup, use one teaspoon (2 grams) of tea leaves. You can adjust the quantity according to your taste — stronger tea requires slightly more, lighter tea slightly less. Place the tea leaves in a cup or teapot that can be properly covered to retain heat. 2. Using the Right Water Water quality is one of the most important factors in tea preparation. Whenever possible, use natural spring or well water rather than chlorinated tap water, which can affect flavor. Boil water to 95–100°C — just as it starts boiling. Avoid overboiling, as it reduces oxygen content and diminishes the tea’s taste. Do not reuse water that has already been boiled multiple times. Tip: If safety is a concern, boiling for an extra minute is fine. 3. Warming Your Cup or Teapot Warming your cup or teapot is optional but recommended. Pour a little hot water into the cup or teapot, swirl it, and pour it out. This simple step ensures that the tea leaves steep evenly and helps maintain the proper brewing temperature. 4. Brewing Time Add the measured tea leaves to the warmed cup or teapot and pour in the hot water. Cover it and allow it to steep for 3–5 minutes. Many people make the mistake of assuming tea is ready as soon as the color appears — but a proper steeping time is crucial for maximum flavor and health benefits. • 3 minutes for a lighter tea • 5 minutes for a stronger brew Avoid steeping for longer than 5 minutes, as this can make the tea bitter. Over-steeping increases compounds like tannins, oxalates, and caffeine, which may interfere with iron absorption and cause discomfort, especially for pregnant women. During the brewing process, you can gently stir the leaves once to enhance extraction. 5. Serving Your Tea A ceramic cup is ideal because it retains heat longer. Pre-warming the cup with hot water before pouring the tea is a small step that improves the overall experience. And remember — try to enjoy your tea without sugar to fully appreciate its natural aroma, flavor, and health benefits. If you missed our previous article on this, check it out here. Why This Matters Properly brewed tea allows you to enjoy its antioxidants, flavonoids, and other beneficial compounds. Drinking tea with sugar or over-steeping can reduce these health benefits.
